History Status: Start of Storage Management history file statistics.

This message is one in a series–VIPOUT 0620 through VIPOUT 0625–that describe the utilization and capacity of a VIP agent’s online history files.
Messages 0620-0625 result from one of these events:

  1.  The current VSAM history file, hlq.agentNam.HISTORY.Hnn, became full.
  2.  VSAM history data was offloaded on schedule at midnight.
  3.  The VIP agent task terminated.
  4.  An operator issued an offload command, F vipjobname,OFFLOAD, or otherwise ran an offload job.

The individual messages indicate the following:
0620: Beginning of the history file statistics display.
0621: Retrieval of the history file statistics has begun.
0622: Retrieval of the history file statistics has terminated.
0623: Names the HISTORY.Hnn file currently in use to store history data.
0624: Four sub-messages per history file, as follows:
   06240000: HISTORY.Hnn name.
   06240001: Percentage of the file's available space that is occupied by data.
   06240002: The date and time a record was last written to HISTORY.Hnn.
   06240003: The date and time of the first record stored in HISTORY.Hnn.
0625: History file statistics completed.

VIP agents store history data in a set of VSAM files allocated during agent installation. The statistics in messages 0620 through 0625–especially 0624–can help you determine whether those files are allocated at an appropriate size. The appropriate size is a function of traffic volumes on your system and the amount of history data to be stored during a given period of time.

Typically, one HISTORY.Hnn file is intended to accommodate one day’s worth of data, which is offloaded daily at midnight. If history files are completely full when the offloads take place, they are probably too small, and data from the end of each day is getting lost. On the other hand, if the files are routinely at 80% capacity or less at offload time, the files are probably larger than necessary, and space is going to waste.
